For mothers who are unable, or choose not, to breastfeed our members produce infant formula, the only safe alternative for babies. Formula provides essential nutrients but cannot provide all the protective factors found in breast milk. Reversing a decision not to breastfeed is difficult.

There is a range of infant milks available to meet the nutritional requirements of healthy babies. Infant formula is the only safe alternative to breastmilk for babies under 6 months of age. After 6 months of age, follow-on formula has been developed to meet the nutritional needs of older infants and contains added vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin D and iron. Follow-on formula should only be used as part of a mixed weaning diet and not as a breastmilk substitute before six months. Professional advice should be followed on infant feeding. Infant milks should always be prepared and used as directed. Incorrect preparation and storage of infant milks may present a health hazard. A copy of the Department of Health's 'Guide to Bottle Feeding' brochure can be found here.
