Celebrating National Pharmacy Technician Day 2026 - an essential workforce for patient care

Today is National Pharmacy Technician Day, where we celebrate the essential contribution that pharmacy technicians make to patient care and the vital role they play across health and care systems.

There are 26,000 registered pharmacy technicians in England (as of March 2025) and many of those are working at the heart of aseptic manufacturing, across both the NHS and the independent sector.

A highly skilled workforce, with pharmacists and pharmacist technicians at the core, is integral to the delivery of safe, efficient & resilient aseptic services that meet current & future demand.

Demand for aseptic products including systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy, intravenous antibiotics and analgesics and parenteral nutrition is increasing by at least 5% each year. SACT is particulary fast growing, and it is predicated that over 6 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed by 2040.

BSNA represents the Independent Aseptic Compounders (IAC) - a sector that produces 65% of all aseptic compounded products used by the NHS in England. Our members continually invest in the recruitment, training & retention of this workforce, an essential investment to ensure the NHS is efficiently supplied with high quality products to meet patient-specific treatment needs.

If you want to know more about aseptic compounding and the work of aseptic pharmacy technicians you can watch our video here

BSNA IAC members are: Baxter Healthcare, B. Braun, Fresenius Kabi, ITH Pharma, Lloyds Clinical, Pharmaxo & Quantum Aseptics.
