BSNA welcomes the new 10 Year Health Plan - allowing millions of patients to have care closer to home and an opportunity to create more healthcare in their homes.
Today’s launch of the Government’s 10 Year Health Plan is welcomed by BSNA as a positive step to a future NHS where many more patients can be better cared for and treated not only closer to home but also in their homes.
Over the last twenty years, BSNA members have provided nutritional care and treatments including tube feeding, parenteral nutrition, Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) and chemotherapy at home.
Working in partnership with the NHS and other partners, our members have worked to deliver treatment and support to thousands of patients so that they are empowered to manage their condition and live their lives to the full.
Building a Neighbourhood Health Service is a welcome step in giving people access to a wide range of services under one roof – yet this shift in the approach to care also presents an important opportunity to build on existing, successful, approaches to providing patients with high-quality nutritional support and specialist intravenous medicines in their own homes. This existing model of care that BSNA members have developed with NHS partners, should be the basis of the shift away from hospital care, where many more patients can be better cared for and treated in their homes.
Our conference in March discussed some of the key questions and challenges that will need to be addressed to realise this ambitious vision – which we have summarised in our Healthcare in the Home report published available here
