BSNA welcomes the Commission Notice on the classification of Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMPs) to ensure EU harmonisation on the scope and definition of the category

The ongoing European Commission work on the preparation of the Notice on the classification of FSMPs was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 25 November 2017 (2017/C 401/01).

BSNA welcomes that the Commission Notice reflects the diverse nature of FSMPs formulated to meet the nutritional needs arising from a wide range of medical conditions that affect patients of all ages, from infancy to old age. Subsequently, this allows room for future FSMP innovation in respect of new product formulations for current and new diseases, disorders or medical conditions that may benefit from nutritional intervention and dietary management.
