BSNA supports World Food Safety Day and joins with calls on all stakeholders to come together for food safety
Safe and nutritious food plays an essential role in providing for the health and wellbeing of people around the world, as well as supporting communities by driving economic development and alleviating poverty. This is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic.
BSNA is the voice of the specialist nutrition industry in the UK. We are a trade association representing manufacturers of high quality foods designed to meet the needs of people with very special nutritional requirements. Our members produce infant formula, follow on formula, young child formula, complementary weaning foods, parenteral nutrition and medical foods for diagnosed disorders and medical conditions and unlicensed, aseptically prepared intravenous (IV) solutions.
BSNA members are proud to provide people with the essential safe and nutritious products they need to live, grow and thrive, as well as support the Sustainable Development Goals of zero hunger, good health and wellbeing through building partnerships for food safety. The quality and safety of food products is, and remains, an absolute priority for our industry.
BSNA joins with the International Special Dietary Foods Industries (ISDI) association and other stakeholders involved in safe food production, manufacturing operations, and education initiatives to raise global awareness about food safety and its vital role in protecting human health and wellness.
During the current public health crisis, BSNA members have put all necessary measures in place to ensure that their products, such as infant formulas and foods for special medical purposes, are available for those that need them most.
The Codex Alimentarius Commission, managed by FAO and WHO, establishes science-based food standards, guidelines and codes of practice that ensure food safety and quality by addressing contaminants, hygienic practices, labelling, additives, inspection and certification, nutrition and residues of veterinary drugs and pesticides. When governments adopt international standards, farmers and producers are able to meet consumer demands for safe food at the same time gaining access to the global food market. (FAO and WHO, 2019)
Our members work with national authorities to ensure safe and nutritious foods are available for people with specialist nutrition needs, providing support in regulating food safety along the entire food chain and ensuring international standards are met or even surpassed.
BSNA is committed to continue working with regulators, policy-makers and other stakeholders to improve the health and wellbeing of current and future generations, and enhance food security. We welcome the second World Food Safety Day as an opportunity to recognise the people who help keep our food safe and celebrate the role of safe and nutritious food in providing for the health and wellbeing of people around the world.
